… the group consisted of fourteen women and nine men, himself of course excluded. One of the men and two of the women were black, and one woman was brown. One of the women had a shaved head, and two of the men were almost completely bald. Four of the men had beards. There were five fleshy or snub noses, four romans, five ‘finely-chiselled’, three hooks, two crooked, and seven unclassifiable. Two of the men and four of the women wore canvas shoes. Four of the women – including two of the four who wore canvas shoes – wore skirts.
